Brazil Sets New Record In Biofuel Production In 2023

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) In 2023, Brazil marked a significant upturn in its biofuel production, achieving a record-setting total of nearly 43 billion liters of ethanol and biodiesel.

This data, detailed by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP) , illustrates a pivotal shift towards renewable energy resources in the country.

The Energy Minister, Alexandre Silveira, emphasized the global leadership role Brazil plays in biofuel production.

He highlighted its critical impact on the national energy landscape and its contribution to reducing greenhouse emissions.

Ethanol production notably increased by 15.5%, culminating in an unprecedented 35.4 billion liters.

Of this, anhydrous ethanol, used in gasoline blends at service stations, rose by 13.5%. Meanwhile, hydrated ethanol, sold directly at the pump, saw a 16.8% rise.

The biodiesel sector also reported robust growth, surpassing 7.5 billion liters-a 20% increase from the previous year.

This surge was driven by a new regulation, effective April 1, 2023, which raised the required diesel blend to 12%.

Furthermore, biometane production climbed to 74.9 million cubic meters, up by 12.3% from the prior year.

This growth underscores Brazil's commitment to diversifying its energy sources and its pivotal role in global sustainability efforts.
Background
Brazil is boldly and decisively shifting towards a more sustainable future, focusing on developing biofuels.

In 2023, BNDES allocated R$2.6 billion ($510 million) to the biofuel sector , the largest investment in a decade.

Additionally, they aim to exceed this figure in 2024 with Climate Fund resources, over $2 billion, enhanced by global investments in sustainable bonds.

This initiative goes beyond simple fuel production, aligning President Lula's administration with agribusiness giants.

It taps into crops like sugarcane, soy, and increasingly corn, which are vital for Brazil's sustainable energy future, particularly ethanol.

Agribusinesses are rapidly enhancing their biofuel production , fueled by innovation and investment.

A new ethanol plant in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, is attracting attention with an investment of R$729.7 million ($143 million).
