BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 16. Climate change is
not a future risk, it is a real and present danger to billions of
people around the world, said COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev in a
letter to parties and constituencies, Trend reports.
“Climate change threatens to undermine decades of progress in
global development, with devastating consequences for so many,
while climate action promises a better future for all.
Growing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty in the
international environment must not distract us from the imperative
to collaborate and address climate change as the greatest
transnational challenge of the century.
We will spare no efforts to act as a bridge between the
developed and developing nations and steer the process to a
consensus at COP29,” the letter reads.
Furthermore, the letter notes that throughout the COP29
Presidency's consultations, a vision based on two parallel pillars
to enhance ambition and enable action with climate finance as the
top priority was presented.
“These pillars are mutually reinforcing, and progress on one
sends a strong signal in support of the other. Successful delivery
of key mandates and action will be essential to building trust,
solidarity, and momentum,” the letter said.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was
made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last
year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive
about 70-80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an
agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992
to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
COP - the Conference of the Parties - is the highest legislative
body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on
Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the
Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held
annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin,
and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
