Israeli bombing of school in Khan Yunis leaves 20 dead, scores injured

(MENAFN) At least 20 Palestinians tragically lost their lives and many others were injured on Tuesday when Israeli warplanes bombed a school sheltering displaced people in Khan Yunis city, located in the southern Gaza Strip. Local sources reported that the bombing targeted the entrance of Al-Awda School in the town of Abasan Al-Kabira, east of Khan Yunis, where displaced individuals had sought refuge.

This devastating attack is part of ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza, where civilian infrastructure, including schools and facilities operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), have been targeted. Earlier incidents, such as the bombing of an UNRWA school in the Nuseirat camp, resulted in numerous casualties among civilians, constituting severe violations of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, and rulings by the International Court of Justice.

The situation in Gaza has been marked by sustained and intensive Israeli military aggression for 277 days, characterized by airstrikes, shelling from land and sea, and indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas. These actions have led to a humanitarian catastrophe, severely impacting essential supplies such as food, water, medicine, and fuel due to restrictions imposed by the occupying forces. The ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties, including fatalities, injuries, and missing persons, alongside extensive damage to critical infrastructure and vital facilities.

The international community continues to condemn these attacks and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and comply with international law. The escalation of violence in Gaza underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and to address the humanitarian crisis affecting Palestinian civilians in the region.
