"To ensure water security and address potential water scarcity issues, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is undertaking a large-scale overhaul of the water sector in strategic areas. This includes developing a comprehensive plan for Kazakhstan's water industry from 2024 to 2028.

The plan encompasses several initiatives, notably the construction of new reservoirs for storing melt and flood waters, the renovation of 15 existing reservoirs, and upgrades to over 14,000 kilometers of irrigation canals. Additionally, the plan includes comprehensive inspections of hydraulic structures and the implementation of water-saving irrigation technologies," the statement from the ministry reads.

According to the source, the Comprehensive Plan until 2028 includes the construction of 40 new reservoirs and the development of design and estimate documentation for 3 additional reservoirs.

"The implementation of these projects aims to increase the capacity for storing an additional 2,603.9 million cubic meters of water and expand the irrigated area to 295,041 hectares. This initiative also ensures reliable water supply to various sectors of the economy and mitigates the risk of emergencies. Furthermore, to enhance water resource efficiency and prevent future shortages in water-deficient regions of the country, the action plan for implementing the Concept of Development of the Water Resources Management System of Kazakhstan for 2024-2030 (approved by the Government of Kazakhstan on February 5, 2024, under No. 66) includes research into promising options for territorial redistribution of water resources, including the rivers Ertis and Kigach," said the ministry.
