Australia collaborates with Amazon for top-secret cloud service

(MENAFN) The Australian government unveiled plans to entrust top-secret data from its military and intelligence agencies to a specially designed cloud computing service developed by Amazon, marking a significant step in a USD1.3 billion agreement. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the division responsible for Amazon’s cloud infrastructure, will lead the creation of a dedicated "top secret" cloud environment tailored for Australia's defense and intelligence sectors.

According to government officials, this initiative aims to enhance operational capabilities through improved interoperability and strengthened collaboration with the United States, a key ally in Australia's defense strategy. The move underscores Australia's commitment to bolstering cybersecurity defenses and intelligence capabilities, as articulated by Rachel Noble, head of the Australian Intelligence Service, who highlighted the role of cloud computing in supporting initiatives like Redspice, Australia’s cybersecurity defense program.

As part of the agreement, Amazon will establish three data centers within Australia, strategically positioned to ensure secure and reliable storage of sensitive information critical to national security. This development signals a significant investment in enhancing Australia’s technological infrastructure, aimed at meeting stringent security standards while fostering closer ties with international partners in defense and intelligence operations.
