India’s PM Modi to go to Russia, Austria next week

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia early next week, marking his first trip to Moscow since the onset of Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine in February 2022. The visit, scheduled for July 8-9, comes at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the 22nd India-Russia annual summit, according to a statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry.

This upcoming summit will be the first since the last India-Russia annual summit held on December 6, 2021, in New Delhi. The Foreign Ministry's statement emphasized that Modi and Putin will review the comprehensive relations between India and Russia and exchange views on contemporary regional and global issues of mutual interest. The Kremlin confirmed Modi’s visit, indicating that the discussions with President Putin will focus on the further development of the traditionally friendly Russian-Indian relations and significant international and regional issues.

Following his visit to Russia, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Austria from July 9-10, making it the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years. During his stay, Modi is expected to meet President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The Indian leader will also engage with the Indian diaspora community in both Moscow and Vienna.

Modi’s visit to Russia and Austria comes on the heels of his re-election for a third consecutive term. His previous visit to Russia was in 2019 for an economic forum in Vladivostok, while his last trip to Moscow took place in 2015. This series of diplomatic engagements underscores Modi's commitment to strengthening India's bilateral relations with these nations amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape.
