S-African leader declares formation of government of national unity
(MENAFN) On Sunday evening, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the establishment of a national unity government, integrating members of the opposition with the African National congress (ANC). In a televised address, Ramaphosa disclosed that the opposition parties would hold 12 of the 32 ministerial positions in the new coalition, while the ANC would maintain control over 20 key portfolios, including Finance, Foreign Affairs, Energy, and Defense.
The coalition configuration awarded the Democratic Alliance (DA) – the most significant opposition party – six ministerial portfolios. These included roles in Education, Public Works, and Environment. The other six ministerial positions were distributed among smaller parties within the coalition.
John Steenhuisen, the leader of the Democratic Alliance, was appointed as the Minister of Agriculture in the new administration, following several weeks of negotiations. The ANC was compelled to form a coalition government after losing its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years during the May 29 elections. Despite this loss, Ramaphosa was re-elected as president by the parliament.
The Democratic Alliance welcomed the formation of the national unity government, describing it as "the beginning of a new chapter for South Africa." In a statement, the party committed to "good governance" and promised "zero tolerance for corruption."
President Ramaphosa highlighted that the primary focus of the new government would be on revitalizing economic growth and tackling issues such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment. He underscored these priorities in his address, signaling a strong commitment to addressing the nation's most urgent challenges.
