GU-Q team shines at International Universities Debating Championship

(MENAFN) At the Qatar National Convention Centre, excitement surged as students from over 50 countries gathered for the 7th International Universities Debating Championship. Amid intense competition, the Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) Arabic debate team distinguished itself by securing third place. Moza AlHajri, a member of the team and a student in the School of Foreign Service, class of 2026, was honored as the Best Speaker among participants from more than 100 universities.

The GU-Q team attributes their success to five key strategies: diligent preparation, structured arguments, quick thinking, effective collaboration, and constant learning. These elements have been crucial in honing their debating skills to a high level. Thorough preparation is particularly vital, given the mere 20 minutes allotted to prepare for each debate round. Moza AlHajri explains that there is no opportunity for on-the-spot research during this brief period. Instead, the team relies on their extensive prior knowledge to construct robust cases. By drawing on real-world examples they are already familiar with, they can quickly and effectively develop their arguments.

These strategies not only contributed to their impressive performance at the championship but also serve as a valuable blueprint for aspiring debaters aiming to elevate their skills and achieve success in the competitive world of debate.
