Middle East Airlines in Lebanon reports 20 percent fall in passenger volume amid war impact
(MENAFN) Middle East Airlines (MEA), based in Lebanon, is facing formidable challenges as it strives to maintain operations amid the complexities of operating in a region plagued by ongoing conflict. Since the onset of the Israel-Gaza war on October 7, MEA has experienced a significant downturn, with a 20 percent reduction in business and a notable decline in passenger volumes.
The escalation of hostilities between Hezbollah militants in Lebanon and Israeli forces along the border has intensified the operational difficulties for MEA. As a state-owned airline, MEA has had to adopt strategic measures such as parking some of its aircraft in Turkey to mitigate risks associated with the conflict. Furthermore, the airline has encountered hurdles in securing adequate insurance coverage for its fleet, particularly coverage against war-related risks, which is essential given the volatile security environment.
Mohamad El Hout, Chairman of MEA, highlighted the severity of the challenges, describing the current period as one of the most complex and difficult in Lebanon's history and the broader region. He emphasized the unique nature of MEA's predicament, contrasting it with the more conventional challenges faced by airlines operating in stable environments.
Despite these adversities, MEA remains steadfast in its commitment to continue flying and serving its passengers to the best of its ability. The airline's determination to persevere through these unprecedented security and operational challenges underscores its resilience and the importance of air connectivity in the face of turbulent geopolitical realities in the Middle East.
