Tanger Med port likely to exceed nominal capacity amid robust container traffic

(MENAFN) The Deputy Director General of the Tangier Med port anticipates that the Moroccan port will exceed its nominal operating capacity of approximately nine million containers this year. He emphasized that despite security challenges in the Red Sea, container movement has been minimally impacted. Tangier Med Port maintained its position as the leading port in the Mediterranean region last year, handling the equivalent of 8.61 million 20-foot containers, marking a notable increase of 13.4 percent compared to 2022.

Official data revealed a significant uptick in the total container load visiting the port in the first quarter of this year, with a 14.9 percent increase to 33.3 million tons. Additionally, revenues surged by 18.3 percent to one billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately USD100 million). Rachid Al-Hawari noted that while the year-end data will provide an accurate assessment of container traffic, the port has already experienced growth in container numbers.

Al-Hawari highlighted that all port terminals have seen a slight increase over their nominal capacity, indicating the likelihood of surpassing the equivalent of nine million containers. Specifically, he cited the TC1 container terminal, operated by APMT, which handled 2.5 million equivalent containers last year compared to its nominal capacity of 1.5 million containers—a remarkable achievement.

The Deputy Director General attributed the port's robust activities to its strategic location at the entrance of the bustling Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, its connectivity to approximately 180 ports and partnerships with major shipping lines and port operators such as Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM have been instrumental in driving growth. These factors collectively position Tangier Med Port as a key player in the global maritime industry and underscore its potential for continued expansion and success.
