Biden aide claims that America might enlarge nuclear weapon store
(MENAFN) Amidst escalating international tensions, the United States is contemplating the possibility of bolstering its atomic warhead stockpile in the coming years, a high-ranking official from the National Security Council (NSC) has revealed.
Pranay Vaddi, the senior director for arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation at the NSC, made this disclosure during a keynote address at the annual meeting of the Arms Control Association. Vaddi emphasized the need for the United States to remain vigilant and adequately prepared to respond to evolving threats.
According to Vaddi, the potential expansion of the United States nuclear arsenal may become necessary to ensure the effective deterrence of adversaries and safeguard the security interests of the American people, as well as those of its allies and partners.
Speculations about the augmentation of America's nuclear capabilities come against the backdrop of the New START treaty, which currently restricts the size of the United States nuclear arsenal. With the treaty set to expire in 2026 and no indications of its renewal, discussions about potential changes to nuclear policy have gained prominence.
While Russia's recent suspension of participation in the New START treaty has added complexity to the nuclear landscape, China's reluctance to engage in negotiations further complicates the situation.
Vaddi's remarks, hinting at a possible expansion of the United States nuclear arsenal, have sparked discussions in Washington, raising questions about the future trajectory of United States nuclear policy in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment.
