Tokyo gears up to interduce its own dating application

(MENAFN) In response to Japan's declining birth rate, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is gearing up to introduce its own dating app, aiming to encourage relationships and marriages. Named 'Tokyo Futari Story,' which translates to 'Tokyo Couple Story,' the app will require users to provide documentation proving their single status, undergo identity verification interviews, and sign a commitment to marriage.

While a dedicated website offering advice and information for individuals seeking partners is already operational, the actual app is still in the development phase. Tokyo authorities anticipate launching both the mobile and web versions of the service later this year.

Highlighting the motivation behind this initiative, a Tokyo government official emphasized the need to address the fact that a significant portion of individuals desiring marriage are not actively seeking partners through conventional means. The aim is to provide a gentle nudge for individuals to explore romantic relationships.

The decision to launch such an app comes amidst concerning demographic trends in Japan. According to Japan's Health Ministry, the nation witnessed only 799,728 births in 2023, a stark contrast to the 1.58 million recorded deaths. Additionally, Japan's population is aging rapidly, with the median age reaching 49 in 2023 and over 29 percent of the population being over 65 years old.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has previously highlighted the urgency of addressing policies related to children and child-rearing, emphasizing the critical importance of ensuring Japan's societal functionality in the face of demographic challenges.
