Brutal rampage in Sudan's Darfur kills more than 800 lives

(MENAFN) In the war-ravaged region of Darfur, Sudan, fighters from a paramilitary force, along with allied Arab militias, carried out a devastating rampage through the town of Ardamata in West Darfur province earlier this month. The attack, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 800 people, is the latest in a series of atrocities in Darfur amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The turmoil in Sudan escalated in mid-April, triggered by heightened tensions between military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the commander of the RSF. This internal strife unfolded 18 months after both generals orchestrated a military coup that ousted a transitional government. The coup marked the end of Sudan's brief transition to democracy, which followed a popular uprising resulting in the overthrow of longtime leader Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

The recent weeks have seen the RSF making significant advances in Darfur, seizing control of entire cities and towns across the region. Despite the warring parties returning to the negotiating table in Saudi Arabia last month, where the U.S. and Saudi Arabia attempted to broker talks, the first round failed to establish a cease-fire. The situation remains volatile, with the RSF continuing its offensive in Darfur, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the already war-torn region.
