(MENAFN) In a recent report by the Washington Post, a Ukrainian military officer, identified as Colonel Roman Chervinsky, is said to have played a crucial role in the autumn 2022 attack on Russia's Nord Stream gas pipelines. Citing sources among Ukrainian and European officials, as well as individuals familiar with the covert operation, the Washington Post alleges that Chervinsky, a 48-year-old colonel serving with Ukraine's Special Operations Forces, managed logistics and support for a six-person sabotage team involved in the attack.
According to the report, Chervinsky has deep connections with Ukrainian intelligence and the military, serving in a Special Operations Forces unit responsible for coordinating sabotage and subversive activities. The Ukrainian officer also held senior positions in military intelligence and the national security service (SBU) and was reportedly "personally close to key military and security leaders."
The Washington Post contends that Chervinsky reported to Major General Viktor Hanushchak, who, in turn, communicated directly with Ukraine's top military commander, General Valery Zaluzhny. Despite his significant role, the report clarifies that Chervinsky did not lead the Nord Stream sabotage operation, nor was he responsible for the planning. Instead, he allegedly acted on orders from higher-ranking Ukrainian officials who reported to Zaluzhny.
In response to the allegations, Chervinsky, through his attorney, denied any involvement in the sabotage. He stated, "All speculations about my involvement in the attack on Nord Stream are being spread by Russian propaganda without any basis." The Washington Post's report raises questions about the complexity of covert operations, the chain of command, and the potential implications for diplomatic relations in the region.
As the details of Chervinsky's alleged involvement unfold, the report adds a new layer of intrigue to the ongoing geopolitical dynamics surrounding the Nord Stream attack and underscores the challenges of discerning truth in the realm of covert military actions.
