Hungarian premier Orban compares EU to USSR

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban commemorated the anniversary of Hungary's thwarted 1956 uprising against the USSR by drawing a controversial parallel between the European Union and the former Soviet Union. Orban accused the European Union of pursuing a form of dominance reminiscent of Soviet rule, alleging attempts to erode Budapest's distinct identity.

In a speech delivered in the western Hungarian city of Veszprem, Orban remarked, "Today, things pop up that remind us of the Soviet times." He went on to remark that history sometimes repeats itself, but now, what was once a tragedy has evolved into a comedic scenario at best. He emphasized the distinction between Moscow and Brussels, asserting that while Moscow represented a genuine tragedy, Brussels merely serves as a modern-day parody.

Orban contended that Brussels has endeavored to impose a model of liberal democracy that the Hungarian populace has resisted. While he drew parallels between the European Union's approach and the methods employed by the Soviet Union, Orban emphasized that the European Union does not possess the same iron-fisted authority.

Reflecting on Hungary's four decades under Soviet control, Orban stated, "We had to dance to the tune that Moscow whistled." However, he asserted that with Brussels, Hungary has the agency to dance to its own rhythm, or choose not to engage altogether.

The holiday on October 23 in Hungary commemorates the commencement of the 1956 revolution, which was swiftly suppressed by Soviet forces within a mere 12 days. Orban traditionally addresses his supporters on this day, and in the past, he has drawn comparisons between the oppressive tactics of the Soviet era and certain European Union policies. Last year, he even forecasted that the European Union might eventually mirror the Soviet Union's fate.

Orban's statements have ignited a wider debate regarding the nature of Hungary's relationship with the European Union and its place within the bloc. As these remarks reverberate through the political landscape, they underscore the ongoing discussions surrounding national identity and sovereignty within the framework of European Union membership. The international community will be closely observing any potential ramifications of Orban's assertions on Hungary's position within the European Union.
