Doha, Qatar: The upcoming installment of the Doha film Institute's (DFI) lecture series,“Watching the Classics,” is set to delve into the 1968 Cuban film Memories of Underdevelopment.

Scheduled for August 28, this session is part of the comprehensive nine-part series titled“Making Movies Modern.”

The objective of the series is to dissect the cinematic revolution that occurred during that period, meticulously examining key trends and inclinations. Additionally, the series will host discussions about some of the most iconic works of that era.

Esteemed artists such as Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Andrei Tarkovsky will be prominently featured in the discussions, highlighting their contributions to this era of filmmaking.

The story of the movie Memories of Underdevelopment is based on a novel written by Edmundo Desnoes entitled Inconsolable Memories (Memorias del Subdesarrollo).

According to DFI,“born of the 1959 Revolution, Cuban cinema was actually born into modernism, with an aesthetic built upon the desire to question the form and style of classical cinema linked to earlier forms of oppression.”

“Tomás Gutiérrez Alea follows an upper-class individual too critical to follow the rest of his class to Miami, yet too uncertain to fully commit to the changes sweeping Cuba in the wake of Fidel Castro's victory.”

The“Watching the Classics” initiative, an online programme, aims to provide an in-depth exploration of film history for both filmmakers and cinephiles.

This enlightening programme is led by renowned scholar Richard Peña, who holds the esteemed position of Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and is also the Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival. Each lecture and discussion in this series concentrates on an indisputable classic from the realm of world cinema.

Scheduled from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on August 28, the lecture carries a fee of QR70. However, individuals possessing the Qatar Museums' Culture Pass can avail themselves of a 20% discount, reducing the fee to QR56.

While the programme is open to all applicants above the age of 18, it is particularly well-suited for individuals with a foundational understanding of filmmaking and an eagerness to expand their comprehension of film history. To secure a spot in this enlightening series, interested participants can register through the official website, dohafilminstitute.com.
