Un Dismayed Over Escalating Conflict In Sudan's Kordofan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KHARTOUM, July 18 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) expressed concern over the new developments in situation in South Kordofan.
The mission issued a statement on Tuesday against the backdrop of escalating fighting between the Sudanese Army and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz Adam Al-Hilu.
"We urge all forces involved to cease military operations immediately in order to de-escalate the situation and prevent the expansion of the conflict, and we call them to resume negotiations," the statement reads.
"We also remind all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law to ensure the safety of all civilians.
"UNITAMS reiterates its commitment to supporting efforts leading to a peaceful resolution of the conflict throughout Sudan," it added.
In a related development, fighting continued between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces in the capital city of Khartoum, Umm Dorman city, and other parts of Sudan.
The army launched air attacks on the groups of RSF militants in Khartoum Bahari district and the RSF air defense responded, according to witnesses.
Sporadic fighting and artillery bombardment was reported in several areas as the conflict entered its fourth month. (end)
