EU acts against social media sites that don't take down revolt posts

(MENAFN) Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, announced on Monday that the EU will take action against social media sites that don't take down anything that encourages intolerance and rebellion.

Breton discussed the violent occurrences that started when Nahel M., 17, was shot and killed by Police in France on June 27 in an interview with public radio Franceinfo.

"Social media platforms have not done enough regarding the events in France, and they will need to do more," Breton stated.

Informing users that, starting on August 25, social media sites will be governed by the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) He stated that these platforms would be required to quickly take down any content that calls for violence, rebellion, or the burning of automobiles.

He underlined that platforms who do not delete this information would face consequences, that might include economic penalties or actions like having their operations in EU countries stopped.
