Brasília - The United Arab Emirates will donate for the renovation of the Central Library of the University of Brasília (UnB). The announcement was made Wednesday (14) by UnB Foreign Affairs secretary Virgílio Almeida during an event at the university featuring UAE International Cooperation minister of state Reem Al Hashimy, who's visiting various countries in South American together with COP28 director-general Majid Al Suwaidi. They have appointments in Brasília through Thursday (15).

Almeida said UAE ambassador Saleh AlSuwaidi signed the letter of intent on the donation of the money to be used for the renovation of the UnB's library, which serves both the academic body and the residents of Distrito Federal.“This will be its largest renovation work since its foundation in 1973,” said Almeida, thanking the ambassador for the partnership.

Reem Al Hashimy spoke for approximately five minutes and then answered to questions from UnB students of International Relations and other courses. The minister said she's proud of Brazil-UAE ties and a reflection of them is that over 10,000 Brazilians live in the Arab country.“And we get more than 100,000 Brazilian visitors every year,” she said.

On the donation for renovating the UnB's library, Reem said it isn't about financial support but about an act of friendship and collaboration between two friendly nations.“Our friendship is authentic and consistent, we've always been friends, and we want more cooperation,” she said.

Her delegation features 52 people who, according to the minister, came to South America to explore new opportunities in different sectors, including education and culture, and of course, innovation, science, technology, and renewable energy, as the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly referred to as cop28 , will be held in Dubai late last year.

COP28 director-general Majid Al Suwaidi emphasized the importance of the participation of the youth in this year's conference.“We must bring in everybody, companies, governments, civil society, NGOs, the youth. We want this to be a COP of young people and we'll fund the trip of 100 young people from different countries to Dubai. We're asking the delegations to bring at least one young person, as the COP is about the future,” he said. In the opening photo, Majid Al Suwaidi and minister Reem Al Hashimy.

According to the director, all players must be seated together at the table to discuss topics such as climate change mitigation, loss and damage fund, carbon market, renewable energy, and so many others.

The event was attended by Arab ambassadors Baharain's Bader Alhelaibi, Saudi Arabia's Faisal bin Ibrahim Ghulam, Morocco's Nabil Adghoghi, Jordan's Maen Masadeh, Oman's Talal Al-Rahbi, and Syria's Rania Al Haj Ali, as well as UAE's Saleh AlSuwaidi.

Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) secretary-general Tamer Mansour and Institutional Relations director Fernanda Baltazar attended, too.
