EU probes Poland for new acting under ‘Russian influence’ law

(MENAFN) The European Commission has charged Poland around a recent rule that permits an unelected committee to stop representatives from taking charge if it’s confirmed that they are acting under “Russian influence.”

The commission “agreed to start an infringement procedure by sending a letter of formal notice in relation to the new law on the state committee for examination of Russian influence,” European Commission executive vice-leader Valdis Dombrovskis stated at a media meeting on Wednesday.

Sending an official letter is the initial step in a legal procedure that might wind up at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) if the commission’s requests are not happening. The ECJ has the authority to give money penalties on a daily basis to member states, and Poland already suffered from this before due to Warsaw’s sanctions on judicial independence.

The “Russian influence” law in question was inked by Leader Andrzej Duda during the previous week. It permits the nation`s parliament to assign a nine-member commission to probe Russia’s alleged effect over the nation from 2007 to 2022, “especially in the energy sector,” Polish Premier Mateusz Morawiecki stated in May.
