UN Official Commends Kuwait's Support Of Sustainable Development Goals

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, June 5 (KUNA) -- UN-Habitat Head of GCC Office Dr. Ameera Al-Hassan commended on Monday the role played by the State of Kuwait in supporting the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the agency's urban agenda.
Speaking to KUNA via phone after the opening of the second session of the United Nations Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Al-Hassan revealed that Kuwait had supported UN-Habitat in the GCC region since signing the deal to host the regional headquarter of the UN agency in the early 2000s at the cost of over USD 330,000 annually.
The State of Kuwait had been funding UN-Habitat projects for years, helping for example to reconstruct several structures in the Middle East affected by wars and natural disasters, she indicated.
In the first UN Habitat Assembly, Kuwait donated USD 100,000, Al-Hassan revealed, adding that the Gulf country also gave USD 250,000 in donations for UN-Habitat work in Afghanistan.
She noted that Kuwait had contributed immensely to the several UN-Habitat initiatives within Kuwait to plant trees in open areas on its own soil.
Dr. Al-Hassan said that Kuwait also reached out to help other countries in the region, with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) granting USD 14 million to help in the efforts to decrease dust storms in the region coming from Iraq and affecting several countries in the region including Yemen.
The UN-Habitat session, held under the slogan "A sustainable urban future through inclusive and effective multilateralism: achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in times of global crises." will continue until June 9.
Secretary General of Kuwaiti-based the Arab Towns Organization (ATO) Abdulrahman Al-Asfour is partaking in the session. (end)
