(MENAFN) Beijing’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu has stated that an army battle between China and the United States would have dreadful costs not only for both nations, but for the entire world as well.

“China and the US have different systems and are different in many other ways. However, this shouldn’t keep the two sides from seeking common ground and common interests to grow bilateral ties and deepen cooperation,” Li recommended throughout his address at the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore on Sunday.

“It’s undeniable that a severe conflict or confrontation between China and the US will be an unbearable disaster for the world,” he also said.

The Chinese defense minister also cautioned that “a Cold War mentality is now resurgent, greatly increasing security risks.” He didn’t directly talk about Washington and its associates, but stated “some countries” had been increasing the weapons race and interfering in the internal relations of other countries.
