(MENAFN) The Absolut Company, the parent company of Swedish vodka brand Absolut, has made the decision to cease exporting its products to Russia, following concerns over reports that supplies had resumed. The company's CEO, Stephanie Durroux, stated on Tuesday that the decision was made to protect employees and partners from criticism.
It was reported last week that Absolut planned to partially resume deliveries to Russia, a claim that was later confirmed by owner Pernod Ricard. The French company cited concerns over the criminal liability of its staff in Russia and accusations of intentional bankruptcy due to Moscow allowing for parallel imports of alcohol without the permission of authorized importers, bypassing EU sanctions.
Despite Pernod Ricard's justification, the decision to restart exports has caused controversy in Sweden, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressing surprise at the move. In response to growing criticism, Absolut has now decided to halt all exports to Russia, affirming its commitment to its employees and partners.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by companies operating in countries subject to international sanctions and the pressure they face to comply with them. It also demonstrates the potential impact of public opinion on business decisions, with Absolut's decision to cease exports reflecting the importance of reputation management in today's global economy.
