Syrian Foreign Minister's Visit to Tunisia Signals Shift in Diplomatic Relations

(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad is set to visit Tunisia on Monday, marking the first visit by a Syrian official to the country since 2011. The Tunisian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday, confirming the visit was made possible through an invitation from Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar. The primary objective of Mekdad's three-day visit to Tunisia is to strengthen bilateral relations and restore them to their previous state.

The relationship between Syria and Tunisia was disrupted in 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime launched a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests. However, the reopening of the Syrian Embassy and the naming of an ambassador to Tunisia by the Assad regime, following the decision by Tunisian President Kais Saied to name an ambassador to Damascus, indicate a move towards normalized relations between the two countries.

This visit to Tunisia follows Mekdad's recent trip to Saudi Arabia, during which both countries agreed to resume consular services and flights. The Syrian regime has been actively engaging in official visits and contacts with several Arab nations in recent months, raising speculation about a possible resumption of Syria's membership in the Arab League. Syria's membership in the Cairo-based Arab League was frozen in 2011, but there are indications that the country may be welcomed back into the fold soon. As the situation in Syria continues to evolve, these diplomatic overtures suggest that the country is seeking to reintegrate into the international community.
