China's Recent Diplomatic Wins Challenge US Strategy of Containment

(MENAFN) Over the past few weeks, China has been flexing its diplomatic muscles with a series of impressive moves on the global stage. Following a successful trip to Moscow where Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Beijing announced that it had brokered a deal to normalize relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, a move that was widely regarded as a blow to United States influence in the Middle East.

China then went on to persuade Honduras to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Beijing, further bolstering its position in the region. In addition to this, high-ranking Western politicians and European Union officials, including French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez, have all been flocking to Beijing for diplomatic talks.

Taken together, these developments have led to China enjoying significant diplomatic gains, while the United States has struggled to contain its influence. Despite Washington's attempts to isolate Beijing through Cold War-style tactics and a relentless propaganda campaign steeped in negativity and fear-mongering, the reality remains that China is simply too big and too significant on the global stage to be effectively contained.

These recent developments serve to illustrate that President Biden's strategy of creating overlapping multilateral alliances in order to contain China is unlikely to be successful. Instead, it appears that China's influence will continue to grow, highlighting the need for the United States and other Western powers to adopt a more nuanced and cooperative approach in their dealings with Beijing.
