Turkish foreign minister talks earthquake reconstruction in Brussels

(MENAFN) Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Turkish Foreign Minister, took part in discussions at the International Donors' Conference in Brussels on Monday. During the conference, he held separate meetings with Toivo Klaar, the EU's special representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, and Achim Steiner, the administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP). According to Cavusoglu's tweet, the meetings covered a range of regional issues and focused on the reconstruction process after the devastating earthquakes that hit southern Turkey on February 6th.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 magnitudes, affected 11 provinces in southern Turkey, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Elazig, Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa. These quakes resulted in a staggering loss of over 49,500 lives. Unfortunately, the effects of the earthquakes have extended far beyond this number, with over 13.5 million people in Turkey and northern Syria being affected.

The International Donors' Conference in Brussels, organized by the European Commission and the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council, aims to raise funds to support the victims affected by these devastating earthquakes. During the conference, Cavusoglu will participate in discussions and share his insights on how best to support the affected areas and communities. The meetings with Klaar and Steiner demonstrate Turkey's commitment to working with its international partners to address the ongoing challenges resulting from the earthquakes.
