US Welcomes Turkish Foreign Minister's Visit to Egypt, First in Over Decade

(MENAFN) The United States has welcomed the visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to Egypt, the first such visit in over a decade. Cavusoglu was invited by his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed his support for the visit on Twitter, calling it "an important step towards a more stable and prosperous region."

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Egypt have been strained since Egypt's 2013 military coup, which overthrew the late President Mohammed Morsi. Since then, diplomatic relations between the two countries have been maintained at the level of charges d'affaires on both sides.

The visit of Cavusoglu to Egypt signals a potential thawing of relations between the two countries. It remains to be seen whether the visit will result in any concrete agreements or initiatives between Turkey and Egypt.
