Nigeria Postpones State Governor Elections Due to Technical Issues with Voting Machines

(MENAFN) Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the state governors’ elections originally scheduled for March 11, 2023, due to insufficient time to reconfigure the 176,000 election accreditation machines across the country. The elections will now take place on March 18, 2023. INEC official, Festis Okoye, stated that the rescheduling decision was difficult but necessary to avoid any problems that may arise from conducting the polls without properly reconfiguring the machines.

On March 3, a court ordered the INEC to grant some political parties access to the election materials used in the February 25 presidential poll. Subsequently, the INEC sought permission from the court to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines (BVAS) ahead of the state governors’ election, a request that was granted on Wednesday. The results of the previous election, which declared Bola Tinubu of the governing All Progressive Congress as the winner, is being disputed by opposition parties.
