(MENAFN) During a meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday that the trade turnover between Russia and Belarus had reached a record $43 billion last year. Putin expressed his belief that the possibilities of bilateral cooperation between the two countries are increasing and that by combining their efforts, they create a certain synergy that will have positive results for both countries.
Putin noted that Belarusian industry has a lot of potential and that Russian enterprises, engineers, and scientific schools can contribute additional efforts to meet the needs of the Russian market.
According to Putin, this cooperation is already proving to be very effective in some sectors, and he hopes that it will continue to be successful. On the other hand, Lukashenko stated that Minsk had fulfilled all of its security agreements with Russia and that the West had failed to contain the development of Russia and Belarus in the IT sector.
He emphasized that although not all issues have been resolved, work is ongoing to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
Belarus has benefited from IT services ordered by Russian companies, totaling over $300 million. However, Western nations have imposed sanctions on Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing for almost a year. As formal members of a "union state," Russia and Belarus have been in talks for years to move closer together, with the process accelerating in recent years.
Overall, the Russian-Belarusian trade turnover reached a record high, and there is optimism that bilateral cooperation will continue to improve in the future. Both leaders are committed to working towards strengthening their relationship, despite external pressures and ongoing issues that need to be addressed.
