Union: Over 2.5M people protest tumultuous pension changes in France

(MENAFN) According to media sources quoting the General Labor Confederation union, more than 2.5 million people in France demonstrated against divisive pension reform plans on Saturday. Workers from all industries have persisted in objecting to the government's January-announced reform initiatives.

In line with Le Figaro newspaper, the CGT claimed 2.5 million protestors although the Interior Ministry only documented 963,000.

The CGT reported roughly 2 million for the demonstration on Saturday, which is higher than the 2 million it reported for the protests on Jan. 19 and Feb. 7.

Le Figaro claimed that when violence broke out between protesters and security forces, police in Paris counted 93,000 participants in the city. According to the publication, police detained 10 individuals, with one officer receiving an eye injury.

Gerald Darmanin, the interior minister, claimed on Twitter on Friday that 10,000 police personnel, including 4,500 in Paris, is going to provide security for the protests.
