The work of our charity links three continents, because defeating poverty takes a combined effort. As an Irish man I am very proud to honouring the life and work of President Michael D Higgins.” - Nick JordanSAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA, USA, February 8, 2023 /einpresswire.com / -- A decision was made in late 2021 by the board of Wells of Life Irl. to honour the President of Ireland with a well in Uganda where the charity operates. Other notables who have been honoured in this way are John Hume, Ashling Murphy, Cancer Sufferers, Irish Missionaries and the frontline workers during covid. Aifric Hyland was the initial point of contact in the office of the President Michael D Higgins and she could not have been more helpful states Wells of Life Operations Manager Aidan Jordan. Aidan is a recently retired secondary school teacher and brother of the founder of the charity in the US, Nicholas Jordan. The combined charity to date has been responsible for the drilling and/or refurbishment of over 1000 wells in regions west of the capital Kampala. This equates to over 1M people receiving clean water through the generosity of the donors to the charity. In recent years has developed the Healthy Village program educating village communities about sanitation, hygiene and gender based issues such as improved access to education for girls.

Many of the wells drilled by Wells of Life are memorial wells funded by individuals or families to honour the memory of a loved one who has passed away. What a great way to celebrate the life of a loved one, commented Martin Kennedy, Chairman of Wells of Life (Irl) whose own family funded a memorial well in memory of Martin's father, Michael.

has only been registered in Ireland since 2018 and to date has raised funds for close to 50 wells. The charity is always at pains to express gratitude to its donors, commented Lou Metger, one of the longest serving supporters both in Ireland and the US. Emma McNally, board member commented,“As a mother of young children myself it is heartbreaking to see the hardship and misery caused by the lack of access to clean drinking water”.

An aspect of the charity that resonates with donors particularly in Ireland is the pledge that every cent of a donation goes to well drilling with all the other expenses met by the generosity of“Legacy Donors” who are mostly US based. Legacy donors make a 5 year pledge in varying amounts to support the running costs and overhead expenses of the charity.

US based President of Wells of Life and long term“Legacy Donor” Pete Callahan commented,“As an Irish American I am very proud of my Irish roots and I have visited many times particularly West Cork the home of my ancestors. I am proud to be associated with Wells of Life and particularly to support the efforts of the charity in Ireland. If anyone wants to honour friends or family members, alive, or departed, with a well serving 1,000 people in Uganda with clean water for generations, please contact Aidan Jordan, the Operations Manager of Wells of Life in Ireland.

The visit to Aras an Uachtarain took a considerable amount of time to organise which was no surprise in light of the President's very busy schedule of engagements. It was very fitting that the visit to President Higgins took place only a very short time after the Presidential visit to Senegal in West Africa. It is very likely that the Presidential party witnessed some of the same challenges there as are experienced daily in Uganda

Nicholas Jordan founder and CEO of the charity commented“The work of our charity links three continents and as such knows no boundaries because defeating poverty takes a combined effort. As an Irish man I am very proud to honouring the life and work of President Michael D Higgins.

The commemorative well is located in the village of Bugalya. Santina Akot 36, mother of four children still recalls the hard days of settling in Bugalya village without access to clean water in the community. For Santina and her children, living in Bugalya village meant spending hours every day walking to fetch water, down steep hillsides to an unprotected pond in the valley, only to have to carry the heavy jerry cans of dirty pond water back up those same hillsides to their home. Not only did they lose a lot of time fetching water, but they also often fell sick from diarrhoea and typhoid due to drinking dirty pond water. Since April 2022 life has changed for Santina and the residents of Bugalya village after the community got access to clean water thanks to Wells of Life. The villagers may not be too well versed in Irish history or politics but the name“Michael D Higgins” will long be known and appreciated by the people of Bugalya.

Wells of Life Irl concluded the Presidential visit by taking the opportunity of announcing that March 22nd is World Water Day and that anyone who wishes to support the cause of clean water can do so through Wells of Life.

The motto of Wells of Life is 'Every drop matters, every second counts. To find out more about the charity or to lend support contact or or call 0861047282.
