(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Jan 26 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) Thursday expressed grave concern over the high number of Palestinian civilians after Israeli soldiers shot and killed nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, in Jenin in Israeli-occupied West bank earlier today.
'The EU has repeatedly expressed its grave concern about the increasingly high numbers of civilian casualties in the occupied West Bank,' EU lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano, told a news conference replying to a question by KUNA.
'Last year, we saw a record number of Palestinian casualties since 2006. This negative trend, which is to be seen also in light of the wave of terrorist attacks in Israel last year, has regrettably continued this year,' he said.
'What is happening in the West Bank is yet another example of what High Representative Josep Borrell was talking on Monday ahead of the (EU) Foreign Affairs Council that the situation on the ground is very dire and very worrisome and continued high level of tensions,' he said.
The EU once again called on the parties to do the utmost to de-escalate the situation and end this vicious circle of violence, which further undermines any prospect of a peaceful resolution of the conflict. (end)
