Media: Germany agrees to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine

(MENAFN- Hip Hop-24) The German newspaper "Der Spiegel" revealed, on Tuesday, that Berlin "has decided to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine."

The newspaper said in its weekly edition that the government of Chancellor Olaf Schulch "is planning to send a group of tanks that the German army already possesses to Ukraine."

She added that the government would also agree to "requests from Poland and other partners to transfer German (Leopard 2) tanks to Ukraine."

Germany has been under pressure in recent weeks to agree to supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks, but Berlin insisted that it "will not take such a decision alone, but rather after consulting with allies."

According to the German newspaper, the United States and France will also provide military support to Ukraine, represented by sending battle tanks.

Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Germany and allies to provide Ukraine with combat tanks and advanced weapons.

Kyiv has previously appealed to the West to hand over Leopard 2 tanks, but obtaining them even from the countries that possess them (including Poland and Finland) requires Berlin's approval.

The Leopard tanks are distinguished by giving them comprehensive protection for their crew from threats such as improvised explosive devices, mines or anti-tank fire.

It also has crew cabin cooling systems, an auxiliary power generator, and a telephone that allows the crew to communicate outside.
