Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine Conference 2023 aims to provide a high-quality, evidence-based update for healthcare practitioners involved in the emergency and urgent care of children.

The three-day conference and the two-day pre-event workshops will be held under the theme of 'Paediatric Trauma and Injury'. This year, the virtual conference will have new features, said Dr. Khalid Alansari, Chair of Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine Conference 2023. The conference will begin on January 19.

“Our goal at the conference is to provide high-quality, evidence-based updates for healthcare practitioners caring for children at emergency departments.

The conference is open to all practitioners in the field of paediatric emergency care such as physicians, surgeons, nurses, emergency medical responders and allied healthcare practitioners. Basically everyone who sees a child at the Emergency Department,” said Dr. Alansari who is also the Chair of Emergency Medicine at Sidra Medicine.

Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine Conference 2023 will be hosted by the Department of Emergency Medicine at Sidra Medicine and Hamad Medical Corporation. Around 800 local and international delegates are expected to benefit from it.

“This year as a new feature, we will have simulations which will help participants regarding some critical elements of emergency care,” he added.

Dr. Alansari said that this year's theme for the conference was chosen due to the high prevalence of trauma and injury cases seen at paediatric emergency departments.

“Trauma and injury cases are common at most paediatric emergency departments. We see about 150 to 200 cases every day. Some of the cases are minor and others are severe and life threatening injuries,” he said. The conference will also focus on other topics such as child abuse and negligence; poisoning and drug overdose – that are key parts of Sidra Medicine's emergency care services for patients and families in Qatar.

“We have three international speakers who will discuss child abuse and negligence. Their expertise will be very useful in getting key insights on best practices in such programmes from other countries,” said Dr Alansari, who was instrumental in launching Sidra Medicine's child advocacy programme and helpline in Qatar.

Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine Conference 2023 is the seventh edition of the annual event; over the past few years the conference has expanded and continues to attract participants and speakers from the region and globe, according to Dr. Alansari.

“Initially the conference was aimed at only local participants; then we expanded with international speakers and participants. During the last conference between 25% and 30% were international participants. It was a strong showcase of experts and participants who were keen to learn and share knowledge from different hospitals and organisations in different countries.”

“This year also we expect around the same number of participants and we have 54 speakers; among them 16 are from the USA, Canada and the GCC,” he added.
