Canada announces restrictions on 2 additional Haiti political elites

(MENAFN) Canada on Friday declared restrictions on two Haitians - a prior member of parliament as well as a businessman who had relations with the nation's previous leader.

The pair are previous MP Michel Martelly and Charles Saint-Remy, both associated with former leader Arnel Belizaire. They are currently barred from going into or undertaking any economic relation in Canada.

"Canada has reason to believe these individuals are using their status as high-profile elites in Haiti to protect and enable the illegal activities of armed criminal gangs, including through drug trafficking and other acts or corruption," as mentioned by Global Affairs Canada in a news release.

"These gangs and their supporters continue to terrorize vulnerable populations in Haiti with impunity and are precipitating a humanitarian crisis in the country that includes the resurgence of cholera," the news release stated. "They are also committing unspeakable violence against affected populations and impeding the delivery of critical services and humanitarian aid."
