Kremlin responds to Kiev's alleged peace scheme

(MENAFN) According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Russia regards past remarks by Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky regarding the potential of peace negotiations as unrealistic. On Friday, he was asked to comment on media claims regarding a new peace plan being developed by the leader's staff.

“We are not aware of it,” the official informed reporters amid a press conference. “We have heard Zelensky’s statements about various steps, a peace plan. But all that he has said until now did not take into account the reality on the ground, which one simply cannot ignore.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Ukrainian government may unveil a fresh peace plan in February. According to sources in the US and Ukrainian administrations, the Ukrainian leadership wants to gain some combat successes first in order to reinforce its position.

During an address to the G20 leaders in Indonesia last month, Zelensky announced what he called a peace plan for his country. It included the complete departure of Russian forces from all territory considered to be under Kiev's authority.

At the time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called the words "unrealistic and insufficient," and Zelensky's speech was full of "militant, Russophobic, and hostile rhetoric."
