EU Parliament has targeted Gulf state in aftermath of corruption scandal

(MENAFN) Members of the European Parliament decided to deny Qatari officials access to its premises, following reports that the Gulf nation's lobbyists spent large sums of money to persuade European politicians.

In a resolution passed on Thursday, 541 MEPs expressed "outrage" at the intervention in the EU's political process, with only two members voting against it.

MEPs condemned Qatar’s “alleged attempts to influence Members, former Members and staff of the European Parliament through acts of corruption, which constitute serious foreign interference in the EU’s democratic processes.”

“It is key to ensure that democratic processes are not captured by private and external interests,” the text writes.

In the meanwhile, parliamentarians agreed to suspend the access badges of any representatives of "Qatari interests," which might include more than simply Qatari nationals.

The body also resolved to halt all legislative action "related to Qatar," including an EU-Qatar aviation deal and visa liberalization legislation for Qataris and Kuwaitis.

MEPs' trips to the Gulf country, which is presently hosting the FIFA 2022 World Cup, have been canceled.
