World's biggest cylindrical aquarium blows up

(MENAFN) On Friday, a massive aquarium housing a million liters of water and 1,500 unique species exploded in Berlin, Germany.

The AquaDom at the Radisson Blu hotel lobby was the world's biggest free-standing circular aquarium.

The 14-meter-tall (46-foot) fish tank cost €12.8 million (about $13.6 million) to construct. It first opened in 2003 and was renovated two years ago.

According to authorities, the aquarium blew early in the morning, making a loud bang and flooding the hotel lobby, as well as filling adjacent streets with debris. Glass fragments injured two persons, who were brought to the hospital, they added.

According to the authorities, the tragedy also caused "great marine damage" because the aquarium housed over 100 kinds of tropical fish.

Guests were evacuated from the hotel, but one captured video of the tremendous devastation caused by the rapid burst of water.

A total of 100 firemen were dispatched to the area, and the reason is being probed.
