DOHA: The Organizing Committee for the National Day celebrations presented Qatar's marine heritage in a Darb Al Saai activity in the Al Bidda area. The activity simulated historic pearl diving as well as the traditional Qatari board game of dama.

The Head of Darb Al Saai's Al Bidda activity Nasser bin Mubarak Al Khulaifi said the activity presented a message to fans worldwide that the State of Qatar adheres to its identity and heritage, specially majlises, which express Qataris' hospitality, customs and traditions. Despite the country's current urban development and renaissance, the Qataris still adhere to their heritage and history, he told QNA.

He added that the Al Bidda Majlis used to serve as a court for pearl divers, highlighting its historic political, social and entertainment roles.

Commenting on the dama game as a traditional game and pastime of elders and ancestors, Al Khulaifi said the activity offered a model for the Qatari fishermen and their sufferings in the past. The place for the game was set up in the middle of 'Al Dabouya', which is a tent-like metal net used for fishing, and it is equipped in a way that makes visitors feel about the life of pearl divers, he
added.
