Serbia might be penalized for rejecting penalties

(MENAFN) According to United States state-run station RFE/RL, the European Parliament can request that the European Union halt negotiations with Serbia about joining the bloc as well as financial support for Belgrade because of its links to Moscow. A number of MEPs has said that a nation cannot aspire to join the bloc if it does not censure Russia.

Following the signing of a deal for bilateral talks between Belgrade and Moscow to take place over the next two years, the Socialists and Democrats Group (S&D Group) tweeted on Monday, “the EU cannot continue accession talks with Serbia if they don’t align with EU sanctions against Russia. That’s what we will say in the Parliament’s upcoming enlargement report.”

The declaration made reference to a draft study on the European Union's expansion policy, the specifics of which were made available to the public on Wednesday by RFE/RL. The station stated it contained language urging the European Union to penalize Serbia for defying Brussels' orders in its dealings with Russia.

According to the story, MEPs want to suggest stopping Belgrade from receiving European Union financing for the development of the Balkans in addition to stopping the discussions on entering the European Union. According to the proposal, Brussels must spend money "fully in line with the EU’s own strategic goals and interests."
