Amman, Sep. 28 (Petra) - Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh chaired on Wednesday the first meeting of the Board of Trustees of the 'Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II Award for Voluntary Service'.
The Prime Minister said that the award demonstrates the importance placed on volunteerism by His Majesty King Abdullah II, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, and the government.
He stressed that HRH the Crown Prince is eager to frame volunteerism and cultivate a public atmosphere that values the creativity of Jordanian youth and citizens.
The Prime Minister, who also serves as the Award's Chairman of the Board of Trustees, emphasized that the initiative's goal is to promote a sense of pride and appreciation for volunteer work that exemplifies the Jordanian tradition of lending a hand to those in need and giving back to the community.
Khasawneh emphasized that the award is primarily a moral recognition and not a monetary one, as it serves as a profound honor and acknowledgment of the value of volunteer service.
'The initiative may have been prompted by the increased interest in volunteerism among individuals and organizations in response to the coronavirus pandemic, but it is nonetheless indicative of the strong moral fiber that characterizes the Jordanian people. Therefore, it reflects self-initiatives at the governorate and Kingdom levels - efforts that not everyone will be aware of - and is not confined to crises like the coronavirus pandemic,' the premier underlined.
He emphasized the importance of framing and appreciating volunteerism, saying it encourages and inspires people to take part in volunteer efforts and makes it possible for more people and organizations to do so.
The prime minister highlighted voluntary efforts by private citizens and businesses to deliver food and medicine to those in need during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.
Khasawneh pointed out that the award's board of trustees is made up of people who have made notable contributions through volunteer work, community outreach, meeting people's needs, and public service.
According to Muhammad Nabulsi, Minister of Youth and Deputy Chairman of the Award's Board of Trustees, the award's primary goals are to encourage and facilitate a culture of volunteering in Jordanian society and to disseminate a sense of healthy competition amongst individuals and organizations.
Nabulsi indicated that the award management committee will be meeting next week to make decisions about the award's logo, application deadlines, award categories, and jury members.
