WASHINGTON, USA – The new Permanent Observer of France to the Organization of American States (OAS), Jean Marie Bruno, presented his credentials today to the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington, DC.

Ambassador Bruno said his country has always highlighted the role of the OAS in“hemispheric dialogue, the promotion of democratic values and human rights,” as well as its contribution to regional security and new challenges, such as the fight against drug trafficking and violence against women. He also promised that France, in its capacity as Permanent Observer, will continue to act in favour of peace and regional stability and the promotion of rights.

For his part, secretary-general Almagro stressed that France and the OAS share common values and principles.“The four fundamental pillars of the OAS – the defense and promotion of democracy, human rights, hemispheric security and integral development – are part of the principles that have defined France in its republican life,” he affirmed.

France has been a Permanent Observer of the OAS since 1972. Along with Spain and Italy, they are the oldest observer countries of the hemispheric institution.
