Ukraine In War, Donates Grain To Afghanistan

Even though it is at war, the breadbasket country of Ukraine has donated 30,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan to help with the country's worst-ever humanitarian crisis.

While the country itself is at war with the Russian invasion, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said in a tweet on Thursday that Ukraine has given grain to Afghanistan through the World Food Programme (WFP) to ease the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The American official also stated that Ukrainian grains have also been delivered to Somalia and Ethiopia, two countries with some of the world's most hungry people who are on the verge of famine and in danger of tipping over without assistance.

Ukraine“funded another 50,000 metric tons of grain for Ethiopia and Somalia,” Blinken wrote.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has affected hunger across the world, with soaring food prices that exacerbate the impoverished countries and hunger hotspots.

Russia and Ukraine are the main exporters of grains like wheat, corn, and oats, but since the conflict began, these exports have slowed or halted.

Six months into the crisis, hunger is even becoming more severe in Ukraine, the donor. According to a WFP assessment, one in three households in Ukraine experience food insecurity.
