Power outages affects US territory, with over 500K residents affected


(MENAFN) As Puerto Rico prepared for the approach of Hurricane Fiona, the whole island went without electricity on Sunday. Over 500,000 people were already without electricity in the unincorporated United States territory on Saturday.

On Sunday at noon, PowerOutage. United States stated that all 1.4 million consumers it had been tracking had had a power outage.

The island's governor, Pedro Pierluisi, claimed that Hurricane Fiona's damage was to blame for the complete blackout as well as LUMA Energy, which manages the island's energy infrastructure, warned that it "could take several days" to restore power.

Later in the day, when the storm approached Puerto Rico, it tore into the island, inflicting flash floods and other havoc.

Cautioning from the United States National Hurricane Center, “these rains will produce life-threatening and catastrophic flash and urban flooding across Puerto Rico and the eastern Dominican Republic, along with mudslides and landslides in areas of higher terrain.”
