Doha: The Fire Station – the country's premier contemporary art venue and supporter of creative residences was commended by Qatar Museums (QM) Chairperson, H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, calling it a remarkable centre for creativity.

“Since it opened in 2015 Doha Fire Station has been an incredible hub for creativity, and I am always so proud to see the diverse and inspiring works made by our talented artists in residence,” said Sheikha Mayassa.

The Chairperson added:“This year is no exception, and the two exhibitions currently on display in our galleries, Abstraction: Subverting Reality, and Beyond the Rules showcase the very best in local creative talent. I encourage you to visit and enjoy before it closes on 24 September.” She said this in an Instagram post recently.

Abstraction: Subverting Reality exhibition features the artworks of Noor Abuissa, Amna Al Baker, Shaikha Al Hardan, May Al Mannai, Hassan Al Mulla, Ebtisam Al Saffar, Ryan Browning, Sarah Jayyousi, Jesse Payne, Michael Perrone, and Twiggy Shmeissany. The artists go beyond reality to try to express that there are no strong words for through shapes, lines, and colours.

Beyond The Rules exhibition by Abeer Al Tamimi dives into her interest in human interaction and behaviour. During her residency at Cité International des arts in Paris, she discovered that people are entitled and live in a bubble that invokes negative behaviour.

“While we are programmed to follow and respect the cultural rules, traditions, and way of life we were born into or are accustomed to, we do not often see other realities, which diminishes our growth in all aspects,” The Fire Station explained.

Admission is free for both exhibitions. Abstraction: Subverting is located at Gallery 4, while Beyond The Rules, at Gallery 3. Gallery opens from Saturday to Thursday, 9am to 7pm; and on Friday 1:30pm to 7pm.

Currently, the Fire Station has been holding a series of Youth Summer Programme which started in July. From tomorrow, August 28 to September 1, Fabric Patterning and Design by Paula Bouffard will be held at Education Studio, also at the Fire Station. This is the final week of the said programme where participants will be able to learn how to print on fabric using different techniques, explore several surface design basics, and more. This workshop is of free admission, and to register, contact the Fire Station.

The Fire Station supports artists and curators at all stages of their careers through its extensive range of residency programmes offering working studio space, creative exchange and cultural enrichment in Qatar and overseas through its Paris and New York international residencies. Local residency programmes include: Artist in Residence, Ruwad, Visiting Artist, and Curator in Residence.
