India requests Canada to provide security for festivities marking its Independence Day

(MENAFN) The Indian government has for the first-time requested Canada to guarantee sufficient security for Independence Day celebrations at missions across the nation while also avoiding interference with festivities planned by the Indo-Canadian community. This was communicated to Global Affairs Canada, the nation's foreign ministry, by the high commission of India in Ottawa. As Covid-19-related restrictions loosen, the community is getting ready to mark August 15 with open, in-person activities for the first occasion since 2019.

This was the first time, according to a senior Indian official, that India has expanded the scope of its security request for Independence Day beyond the embassy buildings in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver to include the protection of "Indian interests" tied to local activities across the nation.

The source noted that while such events were planned by Canadian people, the "broader" worry was brought on by the substantial presence of Indian citizens, especially students and children.

“We recognize this is an internal matter for Canada, but we encourage Canadian authorities to ensure their safety as well,” the official stated.
