Berlin backs idea of not illuminating various landmarks

(MENAFN) In order to save energy, Belin Mayor Franziska Giffey supports the notion of not lighting up famous sites like the Brandenburg Gate. Without jeopardizing safety, even a few street lights may be switched off, according to her.

According to the senior city official, dpa news agency in Germany, “in the situation we are in, we have to examine all the options for saving energy.”

She argued that turning off the lights after midnight would be a sensible compromise between reducing energy use and maintaining the city's aesthetic appeal.

The 44-year-old official continued, conserving energy through straightforward actions like turning lights off when no one is in the room is a typical thing that everyone did when she was a youngster.

Sebastian Czaja, the leader of the Free Democratic Party fraction in the Berlin state parliament, had made the suggestion last weekend, and Giffey agreed with him. Rotes Rathaus, the town hall of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, the Charlottenburg Town Hall, and the Reichstag dome were all mentioned as places that could do without being illuminated at night.
