China refuses US 'moon takeover' statements

(MENAFN) Beijing has refused assertions by the US space head that China might be planning an occupation of the Moon as part of its military space program, and blamed Washington over trying to make space a “warfighting domain.”

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson updated German newspaper Bild in an interview issued on Saturday that the world “must be very concerned” about China possibly “landing on the moon and saying: ‘It’s ours now and you stay out.’”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian replied to the charges on Monday, claiming this is “not the first time that the head of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration has ignored the facts and spoken irresponsibly about China.”

“The US side has constantly constructed a smear campaign against China’s normal and reasonable outer space endeavors, and China firmly opposes such irresponsible remarks,” he went on, saying that China has always rejected weaponization and supports the common future of humanity in external space.
