Doha: Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)'s Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), in partnership with the Centre for Access to Football in Europe (CAFE), is presenting a second edition of its football commentary training.

After the resounding success of the first edition, selected candidates have the chance to be trained to deliver the audio-descriptive commentary (ADC) service at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

ADC is a dedicated service to enable partially sighted and blind people to follow live matches inside the stadium alongside their fellow supporters. Successful participants in TII's first edition of the training delivered Arabic commentary at the Arab Cup 2021 and received an overwhelmingly positive response. Their service helped bring the game to life for visually impaired fans through a running, play-by-play description of the action on the field.

Homam Kadar, a first edition participant, said,“I gained great experience from the programme sitting behind the microphone and commentating on the Qatar versus UAE match in the FIFA Arab Cup 2021 quarter-final in the presence of more than 60,000 spectators. The magnificence of this experience relied on learning the principles of commentary in general, and the specificity of addressing the blind fans in particular. The trainer's phrase“You will be their eyes” remains in my head until now.”

The intensive programme is now open to male and female Arabic or English speakers, with no prior experience of ADC or commentating required. Training is offered free of charge and is delivered in English with simultaneous translation available in Arabic.

The Football Commentary Training, which began in March, will continue until the end of October 2022, ahead of the first World Cup match. Training will be delivered to small groups, from 3.50pm to 7pm from Sunday to Thursday, and specific sessions from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

Those interested in applying can visit . Applicants must submit a 60-second audio recording of themselves commentating over a football game of their choice, in either Arabic or English, and will be admitted based on their overall aptitude for commentating.
