Doha: As many as 160 volunteers have joined Qatar Rescue Team - Al Bayrak, which provides free services to rescue vehicles and boats stuck in sand or seawater.

“To avail the services provided by Al Bayrak, people can call control room of the National Command Center (NCC) at 999,” said Founder of Qatar Rescue Team - Al Bayrak, Nasser Saad Al Kaabi.

Speaking to Qatar TV yesterday, Al Kaabi said the control room receives the call and transfers the case to the nearest police station according to the geographical location of the place of incident, such as Sealine, Al Shamal or southern part of the country. The police station will provide contact number of Al Bayrak team to the caller.

“Following the call, members of Al Bayrak team who are residing across the country like Al Shamal, Ruwais, Al Wakra, Al Rayyan, and Al Sheehaniya move with necessary equipment for the rescue operation,” Al Kaabi said. He said the idea behind forming team Al Bayrak came in line with State's efforts to promote youth centres to utilise them for volunteer services.

“In 2013, Qatar Rescue Team - Al Bayrak was set up with seven members. Now it has 160 members, most of them Qatari citizens.”

He said most of the calls were received from families during Eid Al Fitr holidays. On normal days, most calls come from youths in Sealine area.

The volunteers of Al Bayrak are youths, including qualified professionals, doctors, and diving trainers among others, Al Kaabi said.

He said employees of Civil Defence and General Directorate of Traffic also visit members of the team to educate the volunteers on traffic rules and regulations to ensure safety and security during rescue operations.

Al Kaabi said anyone with a determination to serve without taking financial support from any entity can join the Al Bayrak team.

“The main policy of Al Bayrak is to serve the community free of charge. We do not accept money. People from all nationalities can join the team,” Al Kaabi said.
